It only takes one work experience kid to turn on an old server ("hey, someone shutdown this machine") to blow up a migration you did six months earlier. Depends if you see that sort of thing as a risk.

Re: Running External Procedure With Other Credentials

Hi Dan,

You may try changing VSM Workflow service logon account (by default it's Local System account - NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM). Then workflow external commands will be executed using this account.

No idea if this could be possible to run a separate Task external command with credentials different than workflow service account.

HI Khu11,

I am using a new domain account like svc_vmware to install. You need a Domain User in order to get SSO working.

phyiscal machine (standalone) - for vCentre on 192.168.9.x

Why on earth would you throw a whole physical machine at vCenter? Virtualise it and get yourself another host.

all 3 ESXi are connected to 192.168.9.x but for the UAT the guest OS is supposed to talk to 192.168.11.x

This is a standard VLAN process. You will need a router (this is not VMware's job) on both networks which acts as a gateway between them. As you can configure port groups within VMware for the UAT VLAN.

oh and 1 more, VMKernel and Management should it be of different IP? Because when i gave my management port a different IP (192.168.10.x) it throws a warning citing vSphere HA agent on this host could not reach

I'm not sure what you mean, a management port IS a VMkernel. What you do need is a working isolation address, it looks like your default gateway (which needs to be on that VMKernel IP range) isn't responding to pings.

I understood it as you already have running hosts with 4.1 but maybe I missunderstood, if you want to replace the current hosts with new ones its just to download the new licensekeys from the portal.

If you do not have an existing support-contracts talk to your partner or local VMware Salesteam to get it sorted out.

Regardless of the recommendations, I regularly run into builds where "step 1" is to build a vSphere infrastructure. It's not until "step 2" that I reach "build a VM and promote it to create a domain".

This means that installing vCenter on a domain member is difficult - the domain doesn't exist yet.

I've never had an issue with this. I create a local account and run the service with this. I create a local DNS zone and point ESXi servers at that vCenter, meaning everything VMware related has functioning DNS before creating a domain.

The linking screen isn't very inuitative at the moment but here's the main outline.

First you have the option of logging a new calls/requests or searching for an existing call/request.

If logging a new one, these are typically linked to the original call as children.

If you've opted to search for existing calls/requests, then you'll have the options on the search results page to link back to the original call as parent or child.

Good news is that in 9.1.6, the linking screen will have small input boxes to immediately enter the call/request numbers and immediately link them without having to perform a search.

I know it's really boring to read the product documentation.

However I am sure it will help you to understand the concept of linking if you will read "Service Desk IPK Tiers User Guide" (Call Linking) and "Workflow Management User Guide" (Linking).

And yes, you can link Calls (Incidents, Problems, Service Requests, etc.) with [Change] Requests as well.

VDR Integrity Check failure (index invalid/damaged)

Our daily VDR backups have stopped running because if the inegrity check failing due to the index being invalid/damaged.

We have ran manual integrity checks and the same problem occurs.

Vsphere client does not report any damaged backups.

We have removed store.lck file from the backup destination.and confirmed nothing else is accessing the backup destination.

We have restarted the VDR appliance and ran another integrity check and the porblem still occurs.

Does anyone have any ideas for what we can try next ?

We are using VDR version 2.0.0.1861

Thanks in advance

  • Plug that disk into your client desktop
  • Use either the "Export" utility from vSphere client, or a tool like Veeam to export to that disk
  • Done, without any messing around with unsupported processes

You can do an in place upgrade and avoid needing to restore anything - although backups are still recommended before anything major.

The easiest and most supported way is to build a Windows VM in your environment and install vCenter on it. I'm assuming you'll have more than this one host if you are wanting vCenter?

extraction of request attachments

Hi,

Is there a way to extract the attachment(s) of requests? Currently, only file names are included in the report that we have, but the need is for the actual files --for auditing purposes.

Also, are the attachments saved in a particular location that we can easily access via a windows explorer?

Re: Why does VM Guest Memory Utilisation Differs Memory utilisation report in vCenter Server

Hi @rickardnobel,

First off thanks for taking time to help me out. Right now, i can't put screenshots here for some reasons.

But to clarify things further and to give you prceise information; here is what exactly I am looking at and wondering:

Saw Task manager Memory and CPU usage and noted usage as about 40% for Memory and CPU for about 5%, then navigated to Perfmon tool and set user defined Data collector for Counter logs. And had Memory and CPU of Windows VM to get values logged at every 5 mins, and prepared a excel file with the values obtained from CSV file generated by Data collector. Now it too shows memory usage is about 40% and CPU as about 5-6%.

Now the big part plays: when I log into vCenter Server and see Performance tab for ESXi Host and Windows VM Performance Tab, it reports the Memory usage as 20% and CPU about 4-5%, Now my question/ confusion is, why does the memory reports from in Guest VM and vCenter Server reporting differs.

If, still need graphs, i will definitely put them up here. But I need a clear justification for the question. should the swap in and swap out are making the difference or what could be the causes.

Cheers!

Can I Clone a Running Production Server Win2k8 R2 and Produce it as Secondary Production Server

$

Hi all,

My question is: Can I clone a running Production Server based on Windows 2008 R2 and produce this Cloned VM as secondary Windows 2008 R2 Server with just renaming HOST name and joining this Cloned VM into Domain wihout any problems?

I am doibting about SIDs and Other Registry entried made by Original VM; cloned refernce. Please make me understand clear on this. The licensing, installed softwares and PKI components are all carried to this cloned VM; so will that effect anything on the cloned Vm; putting this Cloned VM into production server role?

Cheers!

Why on earth would you throw a whole physical machine at vCenter? Virtualise it and get yourself another host.

it serves other purposes as well thus it will stay as a physical server

This is a standard VLAN process. You will need a router (this is not VMware's job) on both networks which acts as a gateway between them. As you can configure port groups within VMware for the UAT VLAN.

so i need to use how many vSwitch for this setup? Currently i have only configured vSwitch0. Do i need 2 for this instance?

I'm not sure what you mean, a management port IS a VMkernel. What you do need is a working isolation address, it looks like your default gateway (which needs to be on that VMKernel IP range) isn't responding to pings.

what is a working isolation address?

thanks for your help.

Thanks for getting back to me regarding this I can't see any thing in the logs as to why it is failing

It appears that the deployment of the vSield edge device is failing? any ideas? do I need to manually deploy the edge device first via the shield manager interface or should it just be automatic when I create the Org isolated network?

Hello,

i would need a quick help which download sources i have to select in VUM when i'm using the hp custom image (ESXi 5.0) on hp proliant ML350.

i already read the HP update document: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c03135150/c03135150.pdf (Deploying and updating VMware vSphere 5.0 on HP ProLiant Servers) but i'm not 100% sure if i select the right ones.

Here is a screenshot of our selection: http://i.imgur.com/Nlu5vPt.jpg

is this correct ?

or should i also select the "VAs - Upgrades of virtual appliances"

thanks in advance

Re: Workspace client in a non-persistent desktop pool?

It can but it is not optimized for this use case just yet..

In Horizon 1.0 Data will have to sync if you install the Horizon Agent on a VDI desktop. No way around that. So in order to at least sync only once per file you can redirect the "local" Horizon Data folder to a network share or a persistent disk. There is a registry key for this:

HCCU\Software\VMware, Inc.\Horizon Data\Folder (Reg_SZ) = a folder on a mapped drive, like a home drive or something else that is persistent.

There should be no issues with linking many computers. You are correct there will be a long list of devices but there is no limitation so it should all work.

We are working on many enhancements for future releases. This kind of feedback is crucial in deciding what features will be implemented when. Please, keep the feedback coming.
