Re: vMotion esx 4.0 to ESXi 5.1

Hi ,

Virtual machines with hardware version 8 can only run on ESXi 5.x. If you have any ESX/ESXi 4.x hosts in your environment, you cannot vMotion between ESX/ESXi 4.x and ESXi 5.x hosts or take advantage of some hardware version 8 features like

  • Up to 32 vCPUs per virtual machine
  • Maximum of 1 TB memory per virtual machine
  • Increased performance
  • Flexibility when creating, deploying, and transferring virtual machines

With vSphere 5.1 you can migrate virtual machines live without needing “shared storage”

vSphere HA not cover failures on vSwitch?

$

Hi everyone,

I'm studying vSphere HA and reading how vSphere HA detect host failures. Before I write my question here i'm going to describe in few works what I was studied about how High Availability works on vSphere. Correct me if i'm wrong or miss some details, please.

vSphere slave hosts send heartbeat over management network to master host. When master host stops to receiving these heartbeats from a slave host, it start to look for heartbeat signal inside datastore before declaring the host to have failed. If slave host not issuing heartbeats it is decreed to have failed and then the host`s virtual machines are restarted on alternate hosts. In case when slave host is exchanging heartbeats with a datastore, the master host assumes that it is in a network partition or network isolated and so can leave virtual machine on or power off and on in other host.

I read this and i really didn't saw any mechanism to detect and trigger vMotion in kind of failures with vSwitch, it's a reason i sharing my thinking here.

I imaging what happens in big environments with a many vSwitches used for virtual machines and have many networks paths to send heartbeat. In this scenario of failure nothing happens because master host remains receiving heartbeats. So, my virtual machines using this vSwitch haven't any network connectivity and they still on in a host with network failure. Why i din't move these virtual machines to other host with network connectivity?

I hope i'm wrong or have other way to do something in this scenario, anyone have ideas?

Tks.

Web Client や カスタムで行えばバージョン指定ができることは確認しています。

DRS は有効で 一部自動化 を選択してあります。

External Access View and Workspace

Have a question on external access with Horizon View and Horizon Workspace, thought i would ask it here as there seems to be more activity.

We would like users to be able to access Horizon View externaly which we can do by fowarding ports 443,4172 and 8443 to our security server but the problem comes when we also want them to access Horizon workspace as this also requiers 443 to be forwarded to the gateway.

Ultimatly what we would like is the user to be able to log in to the Horizon Workspace site and then select their desktop and connect to it either through HTML Access or the view client.

Any tips on how we can do this preferably without changing ports?

Re: VDP backup redhat enterprise 5 issue

Update.....

After contact with Vmware support. The issue should come from snapshot..

We tried to manually create snapshot and remove it. Then we found, during create snapshot process, it seems fine. But while try to remove the snapshot, our linux will lose about 7 package, it is unormal.

Then we made another test, we create snapshot without select snapshot memory(by default, this option has been selected). On this situation, while we remove the snapshot, it is fine. Only 1 package lost.

So, the issue may come from VDP create snapshot with memeory selection and our this linux has 20GB memory. Then while we remove snapshot it will result our linux not available for about 7 packages.

More updates or news about it, I will post it here.

I'm having the same issue. Thinapped Acrobat Standard and Pro X in a Windows 7 32bit VM. All good. Added both packages in a linked clone Windows 7 64bit environment. Base image of linked clone has native install of a HP Color Laserjet Multifunctional installed. Once the Adobe Thinapp is loaded and try to scan to pdf and adjust settings for particular scanner, it doesn't see the scanner. Using ThinApp 4.7.3

Any idea? More news on this topic?

Let me know!

Hi,

Have installed ESXi 5.1 and noticed the the ESXTOP command is producing a large % run for the idle (GUID 1) row.

% Run for the idle row is 800.00 and the % used is 391.41.

Can someone please explain what this reading means? I'm aware that trhe 800.00 referres to all 8 cores but not sure what it means.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: VCM Compliance Toolkit - ESX hardening guides

Hi Savagea,

You should use Compliance Content Wizard (CCW) tool to download the compliance toolkits and install on your VCM instance. This tool can be found under Tools folder in when you navigate from Start Menu to VCM Web Console.

Tools.png

Alternatively, you can go to the below website and download the content xml and import it using Import Export (IE) tool found under Tools folder as well.

https://vcmupdates.vmware.com/CPC/VCM/5_5/

Content XML.PNG

Once you have the content imported in VCM, use the collection filter to collect the data from your environment (assuming you have already licensed and configured the hosts) and then go to Compliance Slider and begin assessing your infrastructure.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks and regards,

vCenter 5.1 WebClient HTTP access log?

$

Hi, all.

I'm building a large vSphere 5.1b environment and I bumped a problem regarding WebClient.

Where can I find the HTTP(S) access log of vCenter WebClient?

http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2004090

This kb shows the location of access log for vCenter 5.0 but not for 5.1.

And created client log bundle doesn't include http access log at serviceability directory ( I believe this is where access log is stored, but it was empty!)

Should I enable access log somewhere? or it's not implemeted ?

Or if you want to audit the users' access and their activity, checking the vCenter log is more appropriate?

Any advice is welcome!

Thank you for advance.

Thanks Duncan.  Going to open a case.  Today SRDS appeared to kick off a bunch of svMotions and the destination datastores were the same as where the VMs were already residing...

vmware workstation 9 bridged networking not working

$

0

hello everyone,

I have been using vmware player for awhile now and just recently i started having problems with my guest os (ubuntu linux) not working with bridged networking. Here is some information...

Main host os (windows 7)

Guest os (ubuntu linux 64bit)

So for some reason the only networking mode that will work is NAT. I was using bridged mode for awhile and just about 2 weeks ago it stopped working and I have no idea why.

So i tried upgrading from vmware player to workstation 9 because I know that workstation 9 comes with virtual adapter editor and I have tried using that but I can not get bridged mode to work.

Okay so here is what has been happening...

When i select bridged networking it gives me the ip address 192.168.1.2 and my windows box is 192.168.1.10

when I am in linux under bridged mode i can ping my 192.168.1.2 address i can ping 192.168.1.10 (windows box) and i can ping my linux box/guest os (192.168.1.2) from windows.

I can also ping my gateway 192.168.1.1 from my guest os (ubuntu)

I can ping google.com and everything seems to be working, but i can not get any internet access. When i try ssh'ing into a remote computer (outside my network) it does not work and when i try to do "apt-get update" it does not work.

Now I have tried many things with vmware workstation 9

I have tried setting under device network adapter -> bridged (automatic)

then i go to virtual network editor -> bridged (automatic) i have a list of 5 virtual adapters I have tried selecting all and I have tried selecting my main internal wireless network card a (realtek rtl8188ce) but nothing is working!

I was going to purchase vmware workstation but since I can not get bridged mode to work I am not sure anymore...

Can anyone here please help me out?

I am lost on ideas and I don't know what to do...

One thing I am thinking is maybe it is a DHCP issue. Since my windows (main host os) is 192.168.1.10 shouldn't my bridged ip address for my guest operating system (ubuntu) be 192.168.1.11?

Does anyone here have any ideas, i am desperate!

I thank you all for your help and assistance...

I will be in Virtual Training class from Tuesday (4/23)– Friday (4/26). Training class does not start until noon so I will be working / attending meetings in the morning as usual. During class time, Response will be delayed.

Thank you.

Oh, I have also tried using the custom option -> vmnet0 (automatic) and assigning vmnet0 to my internal wireless card which is realtek rtl8188ce but that did not work either...I saw by doing some research that doing that has worked for other people but I am never ever that lucky

I am not sure what is going on...

Oh when I tried looking at some of my dhcpclient.releases file i saw that the assigned ip address was 192.168.85.128 which is the ip address i get when I am using NAT with vmware workstation...

Maybe that has something to do with why only NAT works?

I am going to try to do a fresh install of ubuntu and see if using Bridged first thing works at all...

If anyone has any ideas or thoughts I would really appreciate some input...

I thank you all for your time and your assistance.

access is denied

Hi,

I have installed and granted "domain admin" inside administrator role in mirage.

example: "domain admins" include 'administrator' and "myadmin" accounts.

I rdp into the mirage server using 'administrator" and clicked mirage management console and its fine and able to connect.

When i use "myadmin" and rdp into server, i cant connect to mirage server. access is denied.

This is strange. where should i grant to allow other users of domain admin to manage mirage?

Changing vCenter Servers & Replication

Hello - looking for comments on changing the configuration of a vCenter Server 5.1 and Replication environment.  Have a small vSphere 5.1 environment (3 hosts, 50 VMs) that has Replication configured.

In a situation where we need to install a new vCenter Server 5.1 and re-create the datacenter, cluster and detach/attach ESXi servers etc.

What needs to be performed or considered to ensure Replication continues to function in the vCenter Server 5.1?

Thanks

Snapshot files

I have to virtual machines on an Esxi 4.0 host that I am unable to change the system drive size on. I believe this is due to snapshot files that should not be there.

I have examined the datastore of these virtual machines and found files with names like:

'vmname'_1-000002.vmdk

'vmname'_1-000003.vmdk

These are virtual disk files and the first one in my example is is 5GB the second is 34.5GB

Are these safe to delete? If so do I delete them when the virtual machine is running or shut down?

Also when I go into snapshot manager for the VM's in question it says:

Consolidate Helper- 0

Do I delete the snapshots from snapshot manager? Will it delete them all, or do I have to do it manually?

Thanks.

you can delete the snapshots via snapshot manager, dont delete them via datastore. if you are not able to delete then do a cloning, after the cloning delete the vm.
