Did this perhaps come with a recent Windows update? I'm running Windows 7/64 SP1 as host OS on both machines.

I doubt it. You could try and open a licensing case in your My VMware portal and ask whether there's a way to "downgrade" your Enterprise Plus license to Enterprise, but this will most likely not be possible.

Datastores connected with same adaptor

Config tab licensed features only shows ESXi 4

Only Datastore2 shows - vmfs3

Not much experience with product - will have to lookup "manually upgrade VMFS datastores - thought running the 5.1 install disk completed all tasks for upgrading stand alone ESXi Hypervisor.

You cannot change snapshots in the middle of a snapshot chain. Only the latest link in a chain can be modified using the procedure mentioned by .

So you had a host running ESXi 4.1 with 2 datastores, ran an upgrade of the host and now you can only see the second datastore?

Are there any VM's running on this missing datastore?

Can you be a bit more specific about how the datastores are connected and what they are? e.g NAS/SAN, iSCSI/Fibre

If you select the host, go to the configuration tab, select storage from the list on the left hand side and then click 'Rescan All' in the top right, does that find your missing datastore?

The install that you ran would have upgraded the hypervisor, but not the filesystem used on the datastores. You can right click a datastore and select the option to upgrade it to VMFS5

Suddenly unable to login to web client

Here's a weird one.  I have VMware Server Essentials 5.5 with 3 ESXi servers and 1 vCenter Server.

If I use the vSphere client to log into the servers with username and password, everything works just peachy.

If I try to log in to the vCenter web client, the same credentials fail.  I've tried logging directly into the machine with our admin account as well as the default VMware username:root, password:vmware.

Any suggestions?

I should probably add, this worked just fine like two weeks ago.  I don't know what changed or how to reset the password.

LDAP is not configured so I'm only using local accounts.

Not exactly. ESXi isn't an application, it's an operating system which can be installed either natively on supported hardware or - for lab/test purposes - as virtual machine(s) on e.g. VMware Workstation. Please take a look at e.g. Building the Ultimate vSphere Lab which shows an example on how to build a complete vSphere lab based on VMware Workstation.

Which Workstation version would be best for running ESXi 5.1, 5.5 Virtual Labs?  When I did some research about six months ago people were recommendeing Workstation 8 instead of 9 because of some issues.

Now Workstation 10 is available, which is more stable for a serious lab 8, 9 or 10?

Please verify the checksum for the installation package (.exe file) to ensure it's not corrupted.

You may also try to copy the installation package to the C: drive and start them from there (Run as Administrator) to rule possible UAC issues.

Btw. the Web-Client (the server part) is usually installed on the vCenter Server from the Autostart Menu during vCenter Server installation.

Personally I'm still using WS8, but I think WS10 should be ok by now.

Regarding dual-boot. If you plan to have internal disks for VMware Workstation and shared storage for ESXi, you may consider to install an OS (Windows/Linux) on the local disks to use them with WS, and install ESXi on an USB stick (1GB is sufficient).

PS: Unless you need to use an older version (e.g. because you're also using this in production), go with the latest vSphere 5.5.

Re: Cannot connect to vCOPS (from Web Client)

We experienced this same problem after upgrading vCenter to version 5.5. The version of vCOPS is 5.7.1 which is compatible with vCenter 5.5. As indicated in the original posting, when accessing the web client and selecting a host an error message is displayed in the Health State frame on the Summary tab.  The message indicates that vCenter cannot contact vCOPS to populate the health state data.

The issue was fixed by logging into the vCenter Operations Manager Adminsitration portal on the vCOPS UI appliance, un-registering the vCenter server and then re-registering the vCenter server on the Registration page.

In our scenario we actually had two vCenter servers registered with the vCOPS server. Both were upgraded to version 5.5 however only one had the issue. The two vCetner servers were in linked mode. From the web client, when you selected a host in one vCenter the Health State data was displayed normally. Selecting a host in the other vCenter produced the error in the Health State frame.

Just got the connection errors still even after patching the server with the latest round of patches that someone posted earlier.

Help! This is happening to me as well. I have tried Heartbeat 6.5.1 and 6.6. Both fail at the SSO Master password. I too have verified the master password is valid by running rsautil reset-admin-password.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

vCAC 6.0 - Set CDROM drive to certain letter during VM provisioning

$

This may be a silly question but....

If you wanted to set the CDROM drive to a certain drive letter during provisioning of VMs through vCAC (cloning), what would be the easiest way to do that?  For example, if I always wanted the CD-ROM to be changed to I:, instead of being D:.  When additional disks are chosen as part of the vCAC request form, want to make sure they are added as D:, E:, and so on.  Thanks!

Powercli and Vcenter Operations Manager

Hi All,

We are implementing Vcops next week and I had a question.  Obviously you can pull a lot of data with Powercli for Performance Reporting.  I plan on picking up
the book due out in May for Performance Reporting with Powercli.  How would you go about using both tools to get the best ouf ot them?  I am planning on
recommending we increase the statistical levels to 4,4,2,2.  I would some of the maximum counters not available in level 1,2 and 3.  Perhaps I will
not need to do this with the implementation of VCOPS.   I am really interested in true maximums vs avg max values.   What would you guys recommend?
Do you see Vcops as a replacement for scripting via Powercli? Dashboards vs scripts? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg
